Members are encouraged to attend Thursday lunch meetings whenever they can. They are an opportunity for fellowship, to hear interesting speakers, and to catch up with our Club activities.

Order before 10am on Thursday and your order will be in the till under your name
Enter through the Cafe via the black doors on the street, and go through the Cafe
While you go past the counter, please pay for your meal (we will no longer have an extra staff member to take your payments in the Event Space). Let staff know you pre-ordered and your name
You must wear a mask until you are in the Event Space, then again when you leave out the main glass doors

A photo in last weeks bulletin related to a project where six Community Projects group members, two spouses, two children and three Rotaractors gathered to bake nearly 250 Anzac biscuits (20 bags), bag them and prepare labels with messages of appreciation, on Sunday 7th November. They were distributed to the chaplaincy services at the two tertiary institutions and the hospital the next day. The campus chaplains offer pastoral care and spiritual support for all students and staff at the University of Otago and Otago Polytechnic. They provide support for people of all faiths and none. In May, the Club Trust gave a grant to the tertiary chaplaincy service at the University, some of which is used to provide free refreshments to students using the Upper Room which is a drop in area for students, and base for the chaplains at the University.The chaplains in turn, put up a great thank you to Rotary sign, which has our Rotary brand logo, our club website and the new QR code which links to it. A great turn out of club members, partners and a group of four Rotarians from the St Kilda Sunrise club attended last week’s visit to the NZ Sports Hall of Fame. We were lucky to be hosted by the articulate, passionate sports story teller and custodian of this incredible collection, Mr Ron Palenski. The Hall of Fame commemorates NZ’s greatest sports people. The visit jogged our memories and sense of pride in the amazing sports achievements of New Zealanders on the world stage. As you enter the Hall, you are met with large signature boards for all the inductees, some like Richard Hadlee vying to be top of the list! Then you can look, touch and feel the very canoes that MacDonald and Ferguson used to sprint them to Olympic Gold victory. You many also marvel at Sarah Ulmer’s bike on which she won her Olympic gold and which she just happened to drop off and skilfully assemble herself at the Hall, according to Ron, amidst a group of admiring cruise ship visitors. We were awestruck to visually see how far Yvette Williams long jumped to set a world record of 6.28m in 1954. Ron treated us to stories about how he, over a cup of tea and a scone, gathered memorabilia from Colin Meads. On leaving the farm, Colin came up to Ron’s car window and said “here this might be useful”– it turned out to be an armcuff that Colin used when he played with a broken arm during the 1970 tour to South Africa. We heard about Bob Charles, inviting Ron to gather ‘anything you like’ from his garages in North Canterbury. Bob liked to come to the Hall to see the display, and apparently remarked ‘so that’s where it went’, it just happened to be a ‘mashie’, which was the very first golf club of Bob’s. Ron shared many of his stories and experiences collecting, presenting and sharing the material that we can all marvel at. Even if you are not ‘sporty’ and trust me I’m not, this is a ‘must go experience’ for young and old. It’s a truly uplifting, mindblowing, memory jogging place to visit. If you’re thinking of a family-oriented Christmas gift for yourselves, or for our Salvation Army gift appeal, this is the just the ticket at $6 per person! Get in quick. While the future of the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame isn’t in question, and new inductees will be made (think Richie McCaw) the home for the museum may change, watch this space, but no matter what, go now and support this museum. It’s unique in New Zealand, special for Dunedin, and inspiring for all. Many thanks to Bruce Cowan for organising the visit (and the social dinner afterwards at the ‘old fashioned’ yet unique Best Café) and of course to Ron Palenski. Orders are being taken for 2kg boxes (cost $40 with $8 going to club funds) to be delivered to Dunedin around Dec 21 - 23 depending on weather.
Lynne Guy will be coordinating orders which will be delivered to her office: NZSTA, Level 2, Public Trust Building, 442 Moray Pl, next to the AA Building and opposite First Church. You will be advised when orders are ready for pick-up.

Christmas Appeal
The Community Project Group is organising a Christmas gift appeal again this year. Donations will go to the Salvation Army’s clients. David McEwen naturally is well informed as to their needs and advises firstly that items, out of respect to the recipients, should be new. Soft toys are definitely not in need but gifts that are activity-based and help bring families together are especially good. Board games and books are most welcome as are vouchers for venues such Moana Pool, movie theatres, ten pin bowling, ice skating and similar. In lieu of gifts or vouchers, a cash donation would be
appreciated and the funds will be used to buy activity vouchers. Please bring any contributions you are able to make to our lunch time meetings on either December the 2nd or the 9th .
I am writing to you with a proposition asking for the support of Rotary to purchase children's books that would be donated to your local Foodbank to be included in family Christmas food parcels.
The book is Aotearoa Christmas Spirit, a unique kiwi Christmas story written and illustrated by my daughter Alice Muir and published in Queenstown.
Alice would like to donate the books for cost to this much needed cause, after a tough year we hope this delightful book gifted to those in need will truly share the Christmas spirit and if Rotary in your area was willing to join us I am sure it would be greatly appreciated.
They retail in shops around NZ between $12 - $15 and my wholesale price is 3 for $10. Postage is $5.50.
