Twelve fun facts about Christmas

They came from the Internet (www.pastbook.com/txt/12-fun-christmas-facts) so they must be true!

1. “Jingle Bells” was written for Thanksgiving, not Christmas.
2. Rudolph’s red nose is probably the result of a parasitic infection of his respiratory system.
3. In the Netherlands, Sinterklaas (the Dutch version of Santa Claus) arrives from Spain, not from the North Pole.
4. In Germany, Poland, and Ukraine, finding a spider or a spider’s web on a Christmas tree is believed to be a harbinger of good luck.
5. Santa stretches time like a rubber band, in order to deliver all the gifts in one night.
6. Two weeks before Christmas is the one of the two most popular times for couples to break up.
7. In Armenia, the traditional Christmas Eve meal consists of fried fish, lettuce and spinach.
8. Japanese people traditionally eat at KFC for Christmas dinner.
9. The “X” in “Xmas” doesn’t take “Christ” out of “Christmas.
10. The first artificial Christmas Tree wasn’t a tree at all. It was created out of goose feathers that were dyed green.

12. In Germany, Heiligabend, or Christmas Eve, is said to be a magical time when the pure in heart can hear animals talking.

President 2023/24 Announced

The Club President for the 2023/24 Rotary year is Katie Slaughter.

Katie writes:
"Rotary has always been a part of my life as my father was a member of the Invercargill South club for many years when I was a child. I first joined the Mosgiel club in 2007 then moved to our club about 10 years ago. Throughout my years in Rotary I have always been on a youth committee and recently have also been helping with the Marketing and Promotion of the club.
I am a member of Rotary to make a difference in our community either through service or support of others.

I am mother to Ethan, a nearly eight year old who attends George Street Normal School. We have recently moved to Andersons Bay and I work in Strategy at Walsh & Beck Creative Agency."

R.I. Dues

All current members should have received an email from Treasurer Steve Hydes regarding the semi-annual membership dues paid to Rotary International. Please remember that if you are not intending to continue your Rotary membership, the Board (through Secretary David Neill) should be advised prior to the cut-off date of 31 December.

Rotaract Summer Bingo

So you thought that you were getting a break from Rotary for a few weeks over the holidays? WRONG!!

Rotaract has challenged each club to undertake a series of tasks between now and 1st March and the plot twist is that if we don't succeed they will "fine" us $200 which they will donate to a charity of their choice!!

Our Board has accepted the challenge so it is now up to you and I to complete the tasks.

Make sure to document all your good deeds as you go (e.g. photos or videos) and share your results by posting and tagging Rotaract on social media or emailing: club@rotaractdunedin.org.nz

Julie Woods a.k.a. that blind woman has never let the loss of her sight hold her back. After going blind in 1997, at the age of 31, married with two boys aged three and one, she learned to say why not to opportunities that came her way. “Do you want to learn braille?” “Do you want to walk a half marathon?” and yes, even “Do you want to referee a game of nude touch rugby?” Find out what happened when she turned up to Middle beach in 2004 with her blind ref’s whistle in hand.
Julie will be bringing along copies of her book WHY NOT – what a blind woman said to “Do you want to referee a game of nude touch rugby?” and more which she has recently published with her husband Ron Esplin doing the illustrations. Copies will be available for sale for $20 cash.
Julie now has a dream to write 1 million names in braille and is looking forward to writing your names in braille to add to her 1 million names in braille total.
