Last Weeks Speaker - Tanya Syddall
(photo-Gordon)
1. Tanya Syddall is the Director of Campus Development at the University of Otago. She has some 23 years’ experience in construction, primarily in Australia but more recently in New Zealand. Tanya leads a team of 18 responsible for the planning and delivery of the University’s building requirements across its 5 campuses (Dunedin, Christchurch, Wellington, Auckland and Southland). The University’s property portfolio comprises 384 buildings with just over 470,000m 2 of floor area. Most of the space is owned by the University, with only some 33,000m 2 being leased. The replacement cost is an estimated $3.5 billion.
2. The University is currently implementing a ten-year 2021-2031, $1 billion building plan. The drivers of the plan include compliance requirements, addressing deferred maintenance, replacing ageing infrastructure, ensuring buildings are fit for purpose and accommodating student growth.
3. Challenges are the disruptions caused by Covid, labour market shortages, supply chain issues and costs escalations.
4. Tanya described the major current projects:
 * Te Rangihiroa Hostel, Dunedin ($100 million);
 * Aquinas College extension, Dunedin ($28 million);
 * Hakitekura Academic Retreat, Queenstown ($9 million);
 * Arana and Studholme Halls upgrades, Dunedin ($26 Million);
 * Food services building, Dunedin ($43 million);
 * Union Court, Dunedin ($4.6 million); and
 * Oxford Building, Christchurch ($220 million).
5. Tanya touched on an interprofessional leaning centre being undertaken with Health New Zealand and Otago Polytechnic, the re-development of the Wellington Campus because of the earthquake vulnerability of existing buildings, and the establishment of a medical precinct accommodating both the University and the new Dunedin Hospital.
6. Alongside these major capital works, Campus Development is responsible for minor works such as a “slips and trips” avoidance programme.
7. In recognition of the role of the University as a centre of learning, the team is presently reviewing the University’s facilities to ensure its buildings meet the contemporary teaching and learning needs of staff and students.

Congratulations Alistair Logan - Paul Harris Fellow
(photo - Gordon)
A Paul Harris Fellowship is a very highly regarded recognition of service to individuals who exemplify Rotary’s core values. The fellowship was created in memory of Paul Harris, the founder of Rotary. It is a way to show appreciation, and honor individuals whose service to the community and club fosters fellowship, high ethical standards and the advancement of goodwill and understanding through the work that we do.
We often think of Paul Harris Fellowships as being awarded to high profile people in the community and club members and/or those who have held leadership positions, but this is not always so, nor is it right.
Many of our members are consistently loyal, supportive and are there when you need them over an extended period.
Alistair has been a member of the club for 34 years. He currently serves on the Community Project Group and is a regular attender at meetings, events and projects when work commitments allow. Prior to this, he served on, the Club Administration Committee, the Youth Committee, City Affairs, Vocational, International and Classification committees. Further to all this, Alastair is one of the hardworking group of Club Trustees who review and approve on a monthly basis all monetary donations that the board recommends be made from our club trust funds.
Alistair is quietly spoken and humble but he has done his bit consistently over a long period of time. He has a very relaxed manner and a droll sense of humour, as his Sergeant sessions exemplify, even if we sometimes wonder where he is heading with them. Over a long period, they have always been humorous and whimsical.
For his dedication to serving our club and community, Alistair has been awarded the Paul Harris Fellowship.
Nice to have some of Alistairs family at last weeks meeting to share the occasion with him - even if they "ambushed" him by secretly arriving at the venue!

Jackfruit!
It has been eight weeks since "The Dish Cafe" changed to a Vegetarian menu, which has given us (or those of us who wish to) time to try some of the "different" items.
So, what exactly is this Jackfruit which is served as a chicken substitute?
The scientific name for jackfruit is Artocarpus heterophyllus. Jackfruit is a tropical tree fruit grown in Asia, Africa and South America.
Under its thick, bumpy rind is a stringy flesh that you can eat raw or cooked in a variety of dishes.
When jackfruit is unripe (which is when it is used as a meat substitute) it has a neutral flavor. Ripe jackfruit has a sweet flavor like other tropical fruits, such as banana, mango or pineapple.
Jackfruit contains some fiber and very little fat. It has under 3 grams of protein per cup, making it much lower in protein than meat. A 100-gram portion of jackfruit has: 95 calories, 2 grams of protein, 0.6 grams of fat, 3 grams of fiber; and is a good source of: Vitamin C, Pyridoxine (vitamin B6), Niacin (vitamin B3), Riboflavin (vitamin B2), Folic acid (vitamin B9), Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium, and Phosphorus. Jackfruit also contains flavonoids and lignans, plant compounds that may help fight inflammation.
So what do you think of it in your Burrito? Personally I'm not a fan! - Bruce Collier

Incognito Art
A  reminder that the committee organising the Incognito Art fundraiser for club projects including the centennial projects at Orokonui Ecosanctuary and Rotary Park, are still  seeking donations of A4 artworks. These will be displayed and sold anonymously - Some of the artists may be high profile professionals, some may be semi professional , e.g may belong to an art club, some may be well known public figures, but not known for being an artist, and some of the artists could be anyone! Do you have any artistic contacts who you could approach regarding donating a piece of their work? A4 customwood "blanks" are available from Brian Daniels bdandcher@hotmail.com or artists may supply their own A4 canvas.
Artists should  have their work back to the committee by late September / early October and the actual event will run 7-11th November to be held in the Dunedin community gallery, 20 Princes St.
