During the winter of 2010 the City & Community Committee undertook a project to provide and plant fruit trees in several low decile local schools The intention was to eventually provide fresh fruit to be enjoyed by the pupils, but also to provide a living lesson on where food comes from, and longer term to provide shade during summer. The club raised money at a quiz night to pay for the trees. Club member Les Cleveland provided compost and helped the schools with site selection for the trees. Club members dug the holes during the weekend and returned to plant the trees during the school day with pupils and staff present. In at least one case (Brockville) the planting took place in the midst of a snow storm!

Ten years later some of the trees sadly haven't survived. Indeed, some of the schools haven't survived closures and mergers. Forbury School no longer exists having merged with Macandrew Intermediate to form the current Bathgate Park School. However the former Forbury facilities are now used by The Methodist Mission Southern (Little Citizens Early Learning Centre) and I am pleased to report that their tree has thrived! It appears to have been pruned hard over the years to limit it's height but looks healthy (with herbs growing around it's base) and is just beginning to blossom.

Lynn Guy spoke to us today about the New Zealand School Trustees Association, the national organisation which represents the views of and provides services to member Boards of Trustees. The NZSTA grew out of the School Committees and is the largest single group of crown entities in the country with approximately 18,000 people currently serving. NZSTA has a contract with MOE to deliver a fully integrated range of services free to boards, supporting and enhancing boards’ capabilities in governance and employment. The national body actively works on education policy and decisions with Government and works alongside MOE to negotiate collective agreements with unions. As regional employment advisor Lynn also works with individual boards on interpretation of employment agreements, leave, particularly sick leave issues, performance and conduct issues, relationship breakdowns and bullying. She’s all over Otago and Southland trouble shooting - dealing with complaints and complainants, principals, teachers, and parents and as you can perhaps imagine, both the reasonable and the unreasonable, with (I’m sure in no small part, thanks to her) only a very few of them making the headlines. No actual war stories from her today but so interesting and questions ran over time!

Random act of kindness: we are partnering with Rotaract next weekend, Sun NOV 1 to prepare 40 gift packs of baking, snacks etc. to give to the Campus Watch team at Otago University. We’d be grateful for any donations of food items, drinks, flowers etc. and or cash to help fund the expenses for this special joint venture RaoK. We’ll be baking and packing gifts on Sun 1 Nov (10am-1pm) and giving on Mon 2nd Nov. You’re welcome to join the group!
