Last Weeks Speaker - Visit to Youthline
Last week we visited the premises of Youthline Otago. I will be the first to admit that my prior knowledge of this organisation was limited to the perception of a telephone "crisis hotline", and I am sure that I am not the only one present who had their eyes opened during the visit.
Two of the organisations professional staff, Brian (General Manager Otago & Southland) and Kara (Face to Face/Community Education Manager) gave us an interesting insight into the 50 year history of Youthline, and the services which the Otago branch provides from five sites across the province including helpline counselling, training, community education programmes, and face to face counselling. Some of the statistics presented, especially the rate of increase in the number of young people seeking mental health support over the past five years were quite frankly "scarey". It was also interesting to learn that although the government definition of "youth" is 12-24 years, due to demands on their service and the challenges of rural communities, Youthline is extending their service in the Counselling area to all adults (nice to know should I ever need it).
Our club has had  connections with Youthline for several years particularly through our Youth Projects Group, and most recently made a grant of $7,000
The evening concluded (for some of us) with a delicious Fish Supper at the iconic "Best Cafe" (complete with complimentary bread & butter).

This week's speaker is Clare Curran, the former MP for South Dunedin.  Clare will be reflecting on her 12 years in the House and also chatting about possible future activities.  I am sure there will be a number of moments canvassed.
